When Chicago had Al Capone, Sydney had Tilly Devine. This fearsome woman led a highly successful, organised crime outfit profiteering from the prohibition of sale of cocaine by chemists, the prohibition of street prostitution, the criminalisation of off-course race track betting and the introduction of six o’clock closing for public bars. Being in the heart of Tilly’s red-light district and her nemesis Kate Leigh’s sly grog empire, our hotel’s walls witnessed all manner of sordid, violent underworld activity by Razor gangs that spilled out into the streets giving our neighbourhood the dark nickname of Razorhurst.
